Nature Boy Designs' New Site

In the early days of TLTFF, I had the privilege of linking up with Keith Westra. He was a guy with a bomb proof rod tube, covered with amazing art, and a vision. As that vision developed, we began to see the evolution of Nature Boy Designs, a West Coast based company that sold unique products to the fly industry courtesy of Keith's creativity. As Keith developed one of the original designs of paracord lanyards and THE original measurement-integrated LS shirt, the expansion of NBD offerings grew every year. That evolution continued to diversify through the addition of fly management via my personal favorite NBD product, the Hat(ch) Patch. As Keith's ideas grew and came to fruition, so did his family...and thats why his latest move makes complete sense.

It was only a matter of time before this progression brought us to where we are today...a brand spankin' new, streamlined, sleek website AND the introduction of NBD Jr. We're excited to announce this progression here on TLTFF for our close friend Keith.

The support within the fly industry makes it such a unique, symbiotic system. There really isn't any other industry like it, and thats what drives people like myself to LOVE it, and Keith to continue to do what he loves via NBD. The All-New 239 Flies Website

A few years ago I started to see these gorgeous saltwater flies pop up on Instagram from the handle @239flies. Well I knew 239 was an area code down in FL and I found out Nick Davis, its owner, was a big snook, bonefish, redfish, tarpon, and permit guy down there. His flies and photography were works of art bringing a new flavor of tying to the industry. Popping colors, unique use of synthetic and natural materials, and simply awesome names put his flies out in front of many others.

I found the link to his (old old Version 1.0) website and immediately bookmarked it. Nick slowly became an inspiration for a lot of saltwater tiers, including those up here looking for new baitfish patterns to apply to the Bay. As the brand began to grow, Nick updated his website to accommodate the growth and his orders began to grow and grow in size thanks to his social media presence, YouTube tutorials and features, including his set in S.C.O.F. Issue 10 last Winter.

Back in April, 239 Flies shutdown the fly shop section of their website for a complete makeover with the help of Nick Shirghio of Nick Shirghio Photography. During the downtime, Nick Davis continued to put out some great YouTube tutorials on his page and maintained consistent content for his rad Instagram page.

Fly Product...TLTFF Review of Bozeman Fly Goods Bug Collars

In the fly fishing industry today, new products a rising and some falling quicker than most can keep up. New fads roll in and roll out, some stick, as they absolutely should due to having a place within today's industry...glass rods, synthetic tying materials, etc.

With companies and individuals pushing the limits of what the sport can do, from catching a 27lb carp on a Tenkara rod to sticking Mako sharks on a SUP, the industry changes monthly. When one of these changes or emergences of something new make a ripple within the industry, most know about it through the advent of blogs or their Facebook New Feed.

A few months back, some of us learned about something new, different, potentially revolutionary...Bozeman Fly Goods Bug Collars, a way to add style and weight to your self-tied bugs through functionality and ingenuity. When I first heard about Bugs Collars, I honestly didn't know what to think. Was this going to be a fad? Was this a product that caught more fisherman/tiers than it did fish? I had a lot of questions, and fortunately, I was privileged to get my hands on some Collars due to the extreme generosity of BFG, to answer these questions.

So what exactly are Bug Collars you ask? Well, its pretty simple. Bug Collars are just that, small rings, intended to collar your hook at some point on the pattern to not only add color and style, but functionality through added weight (idea for deeper nymphs or streamers) without the added bulk of an additional bead on the bug or lead on the line. Bug Collars, through their various sizes, flush up to whichever size bead you may be using to maintain a fluidity, again without the bulk.

The first run of Bug Collars were released in popular colors and sizes, some ideally catch fish, others to catch fisherman. Since the initial release, more colors and sizes have been added, giving any fisherman/tier plenty of options. And with the creativity of modern tiers, there are quite literally no limits. On to the review...

My initial impression was that of excitement. For those of you who have followed TLTFF for some time, or follow me on social media, you know I'm a progressive and modern fisherman...from my colorful reels, to crazy colored outfits, to giving the newest products a try. When the BFG Bug Collars came out of the box, I had to get to the vise, ASAP. With a plethora of colors and sizes in front of me, I honestly didn't know where to start. I figured the best place would be right with the fundamentals, some goto patterns that the Bug Collars could "choke" and add a little pizzaz to. Wooly Bugger...boom. (Disclaimer: Its been awhile since I tied freshwater bugs, salt has been the name of the game for the last couple of months).

The style and creativity that can come out of this product's possibilities are unreal. Some of the most creative brains within the tying industry right now have been able to put their hands on these as well, and its pretty amazing...

Each pack contains 25 collars and they range in size from 2.5mm all the way up to 5.5mm. There are over 25 different colors available thanks to four different categories of colors: Metallic, Fluorescent, Painted and Plated (shown clockwise from top left below with blue as an example color).

 

 

The price is insane, possibly some of the most affordable tying materials you can find. The collars range from $3.50-$6.00 depending on size and style. Even for the most expensive pack at $6.00, your paying less than a quarter per collar. A steal.

The only complaint I had was the absence of a UV product in the lineup. Although there is Fluorescent, that is based off the color palate rather than light spectrum. UV colors have been proven time and time again to increase hookups due to the UV portion of the light spectrum being more visible to fish. I would love to see these in the near future and think they would be a huge benefit to the lineup and patterns their tied into.

With all things considered, from price to functionality, style to versatility, its time to rate Bozeman Fly Goods Bug Collars! It was not difficult to judge this one, as there was only the one complaint about the absence of UV collars, BFG Bug Collars received 4.75 out of 5 stars. Remember the ripples I was talking about in the beginning of the post? Yea, this is one of those ripples. Anyone who ties, or is looking to add something new to their Fall patterns or help get them through another winter full of cabin fever, this is your answer, plain and simple.

Loon Live Sessions 1 & 2

The new Loon Live started off with a bang with two awesome sessions full of great tying and amazing instruction. We tried out and reviewed the Pro Level of the app for the iPhone (this app is also available for Android and Google devices via the Google Play Store) which allows for everything the Elite does except Mega Offline Maps (by county, state) of Public Lands, Forest Roads, Weather Maps and Lake Maps. Not too big of a deal to miss out on for our area since our DNR maps those out for the public via their site...just takes a little more digging and you have to exit the app to goto Safari and check it out.

Repost: CCA MD's 'My Limit is ONE'

I know a lot of you will want to comment blow this post saying something along the lines of "my limit is none", I feel the exact same way as you. BUT, CCA Maryland is having a big push right now to try and bring "the other guys" (spinning) limits down to ONE. Here is what our awesome Executive Director, Tony Friedrich sent out in the latest CCA email...

"CCA Maryland knows that you are deeply concerned over the current state of striped bass.  Anglers have all but abandoned the winter fishery at the Bay Bridge Tunnel because there are no fish.  There was no fall run of stripers in the Chesapeake Bay. Every year we see our resources dwindle while interstate managers worry if their state will have enough fish to kill.  The final straw came when the Bay States (Virginia, Maryland, and Potomac) decided to increase harvest by 14% in 2014.  Enough is enough.   It is time for us to take a stand.  We are proud to announce our conservation initiative for 2014.  It is My Limit is One.  There are three facets to the effort that is designed to address our greatest concerns with striped bass stocks.  We are asking recreational anglers to do the following in 2014.

1. Limit your personal harvest to one fish per day
2. Do not harvest fish under 24 inches
3. Do not harvest fish over 36 inches

 

To fully understand My Limit is One, we suggest going to the website. In the nutshell, striped bass are in trouble.  The big female stripers are in serious decline and teetering on the minimum population threshold.  Striper spawns have been abysmal with the only exception being the 2011 year class.  Mycobacterious and poaching combined with  management numbers that lack data from the Virginia winter fishery are all factors that are NOT WELL DOCUMENTED in the assessments, yet we are told to trust the science.  We are conservationists who put the fish first. Sportsmen have always been the ones to step in when management fails the resource.  It is that time once again my friends.  Show them who we are.  Show them that we won't be ignored.  We are asking you, our members to join the fight with us.  Tell the managers that enough is enough. Tell them My Limit is ONE!"

This is a national problem as Striped Bass in the Chesapeake are the same Striped Bas population that migrates the entire East Coast. Lee University Adds Accredited Fly Fishing Program for Spring 2014 Semester

Lee University has teamed up with the IFFF and the Casting Instructor Certification Program to develop an extensive fly fishing program. Through the program the students will have the opportunity to take the casting instructor test and become a CI with the IFFF.


The Charter IFFF club has announced  following goals for the program:

• Collegiate courses in beginning, advanced, and instructor 

• Collegiate competitive fly fishing (scholarships offered to the country’s 

 top young fly fishers); competing against other NCAA colleges 

• Research and publishing on environmental impacts of the sport, 

 equipment performance, and educational methods 

• Social responsibility, conservation, and community service 

• Development of new, web-based, and educational media for the sport 

• Global research and travel with collegiate students, experiencing the 

 sport from a multicultural perspective.

Indiegogo...'Recapture'

A few weeks ago we leaked the teaser for a project good buddy Mike Percelli of Rockstar Fly Fishing called 'Recapture'. Mike is working on the project with Shane Scherholz, one of the best videographers we know with an eye for the perfect shot, our friend Capt. John Junishian, guide up in New England, and us here at TLTFF. In short, the project is "a documentary about Mike Percelli, who's father abruptly lost his battle with leukemia. Mike is going back to capture new memories of old dreams."

I had the privilege of joining Mike in Pulaski, NY on the Salmon River for some of the initial filming of the project, you'll notice some of our footage we leaked in the new trailer. The Indiegogo for this project went live yesterday and started off with a bang. Here's more on 'Recapture'...

"Mike Percelli was five years old when his dad, Joel, took him fly-fishing for the first time. A Father and son, side-by-side, waist deep in waders with fly rod in hand along the upper Delaware River. Their frequent trips cultivated a deeper bond for the pair, as both father and son as a fishing duo. Together they dreamed of the perfect places to cast together, not knowing that they would never have the opportunity to visit many of those locations. When Mike was 15 years old his father Joel Percelli was diagnosed with Leukemia.

Mike watched Joel battle the disease for 12 years. Finally, after multiple rounds of treatments, he was told his cancer had gone into remission once again. Three days later, things took a turn for the worse and doctors were forced to induce a coma. One month later Mike’s father passed. The family was devastated by his sudden death and for two years Mike could not bear to cast without his best fishing buddy. 

Mike has since regained the strength to bring Fly-Fishing back into his life and now guides the rivers of New York State to deliver his clients the same joy his father delivered to him as a young boy. After all, Fly-Fishing is not about who catches the most fish, or the largest, but who has the biggest smile on their face at the end of the day. 

Since the death of his father Mike has been tortured by the fact that he was never able to physically say goodbye before his abrupt passing. To achieve closure and to honor his father, Mike decided to create a film as a memorial, dedicated to portraying the activity that cemented the bond between him and his father. 

Eight years after his loss, armed with fly rods and cameras, Mike and a few of his closest friends areexploring the fresh and saltwater environments of the North America to fulfill the dreams of a lost father and his son. Along the journey, Mike will recapture the years he had on the rivers with his father and create new memories with the friends he brings along. Behind the lens will be the members of Cinema Architects, a Philadelphia based production team known for there noteworthy documentary talents that have delivered them awards for “Best Documentary” in addition to the “Silver Telly”.  

This film is an honest portrayal of the beautiful art of Fly Fishing and the relationships that subsequently form around it. The community that has been built around the sport transcends the boundaries erected by class, race, or place of origin, and speaks only in the peaceful and universal language driven by the pursuit of the pull. Your support will help document an incredible journey of one man to not dwell on the death of his father, but to celebrate his life by pursuing the dreams they created together."

Fly Product: TLTFF Review of the Redington Dually Switch

Fly Product: TLTFF Review of the Sage EVOKE

When I was setup with Sage and found out I was receiving their new EVOKE reel for review, I wasn't quite sure what was in store. The only Sage product I had ever used was my Motive rod, which didn't give me the slightest bit of insight into how their reels performed. The EVOKE came around the same time as the Redington Vapen Red but didn't make it to Jane's Island due to it making its way onto my doorstep about 8 hours after we had departed for the CCA Red Trout Tournament weekend. When I got home and found it sitting on the counter, I couldn't help but open it up and give it a feel before even attempting to unload the car from the long weekend.

My initial impression was mixed, I really didn't know what I thought since the EVOKE was unlike any other reel I'd ever held or used. The EVOKE is just one of the newest additions to the Sage reel family and is one of the most innovative and unique. When you initially lay eyes on the EVOKE and get a feel for it, you immediately know its not "just a fly reel".

The EVOKE recently won EFTTEX's "Best New Fly Reel" award and was said to be a "leap into uncharted waters" and that it "pushes the boundaries of fly reel design". We loved hearing good things about it but we decided to give the EVOKE a go and give it our own opinion. So here we go...

Photo Submission

-Photos must be taken against a standardized measuring device ( inches only)

- Measurements will be made to nearest 1/8”

- Panel of judges have final say in determination of fish length.

- Photos must be sent in an email to pickerel@ccamd.org

            Must include participant name and date fish were caught, plus estimate of length.

- ONLY ONE PICTURE PER FISH SHOULD BE SENT

A confirmation email will be your record of registration.

Best Practices for Careful Catch and Release

Tidal Pickerel are a special fish living on the edge of their range here in MD.   Salinity levels and water quality seem to control their population cycles.   It is important that while catching and releasing Pickerel fishermen use care, and adhere to some best practices.

Pickerel have the best chance of surviving when they are not handled extensively, or kept out of the water for an extended period of time.   Please use care when taking pictures and do your best to only keep the fish out of the water for a limited time.

Catch and release mortality can be high when fish are deep hooked.   Actively retrieving artificials, or artificials tipped with bait should limit the amount of deep hooking which occurs.

Pickerel are aggressive feeders and fighters and treble hooks can cause a great deal of damage if not modified.  Please roll 2 of the hooks inward, or clip off 2 of the hooks before using treble hooks for Pickerel, or any other fish you intend to release.
