IFTD 2016 New Product Showcase Winners

Orlando, FL: More than 225 attendees of International Fly Tackle Dealer voted for their favorite new products for 2016. In total, 28 categories were represented, from fly rods and waders to books and DVDs. The voting occurred in a secure space separate from the manufacturers, and the results are calculated by code, ensuring the winners are kept a surprise until the very end.

American Fly Fishing Trade Association vice-chair Michael White announced the winners at the annual “Party at the Pond” event on Thursday, July 14, 2016. Simms Fishing Products, Sage, and RIO were the big winners, with Simms Fishing Products racking up five categories. Sage took overall Best of Show honors with the Sage X590 freshwater fly rod.

The material is made of opaque two tone 8” sections of fluorescent pink and fluorescent chartreuse color changing tippet with highly defined hard color changes. These color breaks create maximum contrast to allow anglers to get visual cues when tight line nymphing. The best indicator material for building sighters for European Style Nymphing.

The Tarpon QuickShooter is designed with a short head that is 30 feet in length and a full line size heavier to easily load modern saltwater rods. The powerful front taper makes it a breeze to cast large flies or to punch into tough winds, while a long back taper and handling section enables anglers to pick up and re-target second shot casts. This line is ideal for close range shots at tarpon and on low light days when quick casts are essential. 

This line is available in both full floating and floating with a 10 foot, clear intermediate tip that will sink at 1.5 inches per second. Welded loops on both ends allow quick rigging, and the AgentX and Extreme Slickness coating on the strong, stiff core will not wilt in the heat. The Tarpon QuickShooter is available in WF10F – WF12F in sea grass and sand color and WF10F/I – WF12F/I in clear tip and sea grass color for a retail price of $89.95.

UPDATED: RIO Products Unveils Its Fly Line Selector App

With that in mind, RIO recently launched its RIO Fly Line Selector App as an effective way to help anglers choose the right fly line every time.

“Here at RIO, we realize that there are a lot of fly lines on the market, and a great number of fly fishers are confused by the choices available,” says Simon Gawesworth, RIO brand manager. “We believe in making it easier for anglers to choose the right fly line for a given situation, and this app is the next step in our education process.”

Available for iPhone, iPad and Android, this free app starts by asking which type of rod the angler will use. It then leads participants through the rod make and model to water type, environmental conditions, geography, species, line density, and the specific application desired. Once each step is completed, the app offers line choices where users can dive deeper into the specifics of each line, visit RIO’s website, and even find the closest dealers to purchase the line. 

Gawesworth adds “This app is an incredibly useful asset for retailers and consumers alike and certainly makes it very simple to choose the right fly line for most fishing situations. Imagine a specialty trout fly shop that has a customer come in asking for advice on a line for Dorado fishing in Argentina.
