The River

Crawford County Michigan, for many, is the center of the fly fishing universe. The "Holy Waters" of the Au Sable river it's glistening sun. The Au Sable is life. From legendary mayfly hatches to the birth of Trout Unlimited. From its famed Au Sable river boats, to the epic battles over land and mineral rights between profit crazed corporations and grizzled river warriors, this river and its storied trout are the life's blood of a generation.

The River, presents a fair and balanced view of the importance of the
Au Sable River to it's valley, it's wild creatures and it's passionate guardians
and the anglers. This film brings home the expectations, and the sense of obligation,
of angling a fragile, treasured stream. Robert, you did a wonderful job with this
dvd and I'm proud to have been a part of it!

The River captures the very essence of an American fly fishing icon.
The Au Sable's rich history, colorful fly fishing culture, and some of its secrets
are blended with wonderful filming and editing to create a complete picture
of the entire experience. I seemed to be transported to The River's edge
and left with an overwhelming feeling to grab a 5 weight and run out the door.

Loon Live Tonight

LOON LIVE: FULL OF FURLS
{  furl   /fÉ™rl/   verb - roll or fold up and secure neatly  }

It's always a good time to roll out  a new trick or put a twist on an existing pattern.  This week Matt is weaving in something different to a couple otherwise familiar patterns:  furls.  He'll be demonstrating how to put a new spin on anything that uses a stinger hook as well as creating extended body dry flies.  These two patterns are excellent, but the concepts can be wrapped into a ton of different bugs.

We'll see you Tonight at 6pm PST!

Loon Live TONIGHT!

LOON LIVE: SIMPLY COMPLEX
On the spectrum between simple and complex there are great flies scattered throughout.  Your married wing classic steelhead flies and your Atlantic salmon patterns have their place.... so do your San Juan worms and three-material midges.  All that is to say: if you're drawn to simple flies then stick with it!  If you dig tying bugs that take the better part of an hour, then we've got your back.

This Matt is offering a little dab of both.  He's tying up his Simply Complex Bugger as well as Dr May, which is a sleek ninja-esque nymph.  Neither is too terribly intricate, but both offer a couple unique tricks that you'll be a better tyer for having learned.

We'll see you on Thursday at 6pm PST!

Loon Live TONIGHT

LOON LIVE: IT'S THE MATERIALS & WHAT YOU DO WITH THEM
Sometimes  changing one thing changes everything, and sometimes changing everything is a good thing.  This week on Loon Live Matt will be demonstrating some new techniques and some new materials that could make a huge difference in the flies you tie.  He'll be showcasing two nymphs that look and perform totally different from each other, but the only difference is the bead that is used.  He'll also be showing off some flashy new materials on his Synister Leach,  and talking about dubbing brushes and why he loves them.

We'll see you on Tonight at 6pm PST!

Fly Tying...Junk in Da Trunk

A streamer with a big heavy butt! It rattles on the pulls, leave a pause and it will sink tail first.Perfect mimic of a dying baitfish.I pack the fibres on the head a bit to create more buoyancy at the front.Attach direct to your leader, or if you use a clip or swivel be sure to add more weight to your tail.

Daily Reel...'The West Is Calling: Season 1, Ep. 1 - Runoff'

As sure as the snow falls in the Rockies every winter, it melts every spring. Runoff can certainly impact our ability to fish, and sometimes closing your eyes and waiting until it's over seems like the best option. However, instead of resorting to non-fishing activities, we decided to set out and explore some runoff fishing options - and this season had a little bit of everything: deep canyons, salmonflies, meadow streams, alpine creeks, wind, cutties, browns, dry flies, and big streamers.
