UPDATED: RIO Products Unveils Its Fly Line Selector App
Via Pitch Engine:
RIO’s pursuit of making it easier for anglers to choose the correct fly line for every condition has taken a giant step forward. Introducing an incredibly useful app that suggests the perfect RIO fly line by pairing hundreds of fly rods on the market with specific species, angling environments, situations and conditions. This short film introduces how the app works.
Idaho Falls, Idaho (August 1, 2014) – RIO Products makes the connection to fish come easier for anglers whether it’s through its lines, leaders and tippet or through education on the consumer and dealer level. With that in mind, RIO recently launched its RIO Fly Line Selector App as an effective way to help anglers choose the right fly line every time.
“Here at RIO, we realize that there are a lot of fly lines on the market, and a great number of fly fishers are confused by the choices available,” says Simon Gawesworth, RIO brand manager. “We believe in making it easier for anglers to choose the right fly line for a given situation, and this app is the next step in our education process.”
Available for iPhone, iPad and Android, this free app starts by asking which type of rod the angler will use. It then leads participants through the rod make and model to water type, environmental conditions, geography, species, line density, and the specific application desired. Once each step is completed, the app offers line choices where users can dive deeper into the specifics of each line, visit RIO’s website, and even find the closest dealers to purchase the line.
Gawesworth adds “This app is an incredibly useful asset for retailers and consumers alike and certainly makes it very simple to choose the right fly line for most fishing situations. Imagine a specialty trout fly shop that has a customer come in asking for advice on a line for Dorado fishing in Argentina. With a few taps of the app, the perfect line will be revealed – ensuring both angler and retailer are happy.”
The app is now available to download from iTunes and Google Play; shortcut links to which can be found here: www.rioproducts.com/apps.
RIO. Make the connection.

Fly Product...The Drake App
Via TFM:
- Easily one of the biggest benefits—beyond just the ever-growing influence of tablets and smartphones—is the number of people who can now pass along mag content to their friends through social media channels. When I see, for example, someone send out a tweet that includes John Larison's steelhead essay from the winter issue, I know that wouldn't have happened without the app.
Check out iTunes to purchase The Drake issue by issue or subscribe for the year.

I subscribe to just a couple fly fishing magazines and am always eager for the fresh copy of The Drake to show up in my mailbox, though the last several issues I've picked up for my iPad mini through The Drake app, available for iPad and iPhone, just to see how it reads and flows from the print version. I like the digital version a lot and feel that it's a stellar compliment to the magazine. Navigation is easy page by page and there are some added benefits to the digital version with the ability to add videos to stories along with following up on websites linked within the pages as well.
Recently Tom Bie and I traded a few emails and he passed along these thoughts on The Drake app...
- None of this happens without a talented, contemporary designer with a keen grasp of how print and digital designs should compliment each other. We are fortunate to be working with Mark Lesh, who has a lot of experience with both, and also happens to be a dedicated flyfisher.
- The two-layer concept of Mag+ (The company we run The Drake app through) is key, allowing you to scroll text without losing the background image. This makes for simple, intuitive navigation, yet offers a viewing experience far surpassing that of a basic flipbook or strictly PDF-designed digi-mag, especially in the iPhone or iPad mini.
- Allowing users to access all of our advertisers' websites in-app, rather than needing to open a browser, is a huge plus for both users and advertisers, making it a faster, easier, and more streamlined way to get information.
- As you allude to--embedding video is a huge part of this, especially with so many talented writers and photographers now shooting video as part of their trip. Ryan Peterson's excellent taimen collaboration with John Sherman in the spring issue is a perfect example of that.
- Probably my biggest surprise over the past year is how many foreign digital subscribers we've added. I simply had no idea how many people were interested in flyfishing, or in The Drake, who just didn't want to pay the outrageous shipping costs to send copies overseas.

Fly Product...TLTFF Review of GPS Fish App by Trimble Outdoors
I was contacted a few months ago, right near the beginning of winter about an app that had been released that was right up my alley. Before we delve into the app itself, let me give you a little background about Trimble Outdoors, the company behind the app, via their site...
Trimble® Outdoors™ is a software product family from Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) – a world leader in GPS since 1978. With Trimble Outdoors, consumers can use their GPS-enabled cell phones to navigate trails and highways, track their fitness performance, geocache, and create, manage and share those experiences with others.
By leveraging Trimble’s 30 years of expertise in GPS, software, and communications, Trimble Outdoors delivers cost-effective and convenient position-based services that promote consumers' well-being, security, and enjoyment.
Though best known for GPS technology, Trimble integrates a wide range of positioning technologies including GPS, laser, optical and inertial technologies with application software, wireless communications, and services to provide complete commercial solutions. Its integrated solutions allow customers to collect, manage and analyze complex information faster and easier, making them more productive, efficient and profitable.
Trimble creates unique positioning products applying its technology to everything from planning a day hiking trip or tracking your fitness performance to expeditions to Mt. Everest to projects with NASA. Trimble's portfolio includes over 700 patents and serves as the basis for the broadest positioning offerings in the industry.
Trimble products are used in over 100 countries around the world. More than 3,600 employees in over 18 countries, coupled with a highly capable network of dealers and distribution partners serve and support Trimble customers.
Trimble's family of apps provide trip planning tools via their site and the iPad that allow someone to network to their mobile devices to be used in the field. Trimble has mapping apps, their hunting app and their fishing app that are ideal for the outdoorsman.
The Trimble GPS Fish App was designed specifically for anglers of all types and has three different levels, free, pro, and elite depending on how much money you want to spend and what features are ideal for you. Click here to see what each level allows you to do and click "Features".
It allows the angler to:
- Create a fish journal: Trimble GPS Fish tracks your daily catches.
- Lake Maps: See depth contours for 6,900 lakes in the United States. (Elite only)
- Weather Reports: Check five-day weather forecasts.
- Sun/Moon: See solar and lunar phases by date and location.
- Create your own offline map bundles and view maps off-the-grid (Pro app and Elite only)
- Record unlimited tracks on seamless maps.
- Navigate with the digital compass.
- Mark waypoints of spots like a fishing hole, where you caught fish, or the boat dock.
- Capture photos and videos.
- See 10+ computer stats, including mileage, speed and direction.
- Use our online Trip Planner at GPSHuntFish.com to scout fishing spots.
- Auto-sync your private online trips with your GPS Fish phone app.
The Pro Level of the app is $4.99, a bit pricey but for the features, not too bad. For the Elite Level, there are two different ways to join. After a 14-day trial period, Elite will cost either $2.99/month or an annual membership fee is available at $29.99...a $5.89 savings if you decide to go by paying month to month for a whole year. Once you go Elite, you have that level for all of the Trimble apps/sites, GPS Hunt, GPS Fish, GPS Maps, and GPSFishHunt.com.
We tried out and reviewed the Pro Level of the app for the iPhone (this app is also available for Android and Google devices via the Google Play Store) which allows for everything the Elite does except Mega Offline Maps (by county, state) of Public Lands, Forest Roads, Weather Maps and Lake Maps. Not too big of a deal to miss out on for our area since our DNR maps those out for the public via their site...just takes a little more digging and you have to exit the app to goto Safari and check it out.
We also found that there is a full support section on the apps page to help answer any questions you may have and it is available to all levels of users.

Fly Product: Galileo
This has to be one of the sickest products on the market right now for Apple stuff! If you notice in the video...it works for a GoPro as well! Meet Galileo...
This is the Galileo, a tilting, spinning 360˚ camera mount for your iPhone. It can pan, enable cool moving time-lapses, or even just work as a powered iPhone dock (it comes with a USB cable and a lithium-polymer battery).
But when you see the video below, with its wonderful a-ha moment, you’ll want one right away.
That’s right. The Galileo lets you remote control its movement from another iOS device. So if you are chatting to your kid via video (as in the example above) and he inevitably wanders off, you can just swipe the screen of your iPad and the iPhone at the other end will move on its Galileo gymbal. That’s pretty amazing right there.
I could do with one of these at my parents’ place. Whenever I Skype them, my mother puts her netbook on the living room coffee table and points it up. I get a great view of the entire wall behind them, and their two heads barely peeking over the bottom of the frame.
The Galileo’s design allows infinite 360˚ spins in both directions, at up to 200˚ per second. Other uses — should you wish to sacrifice an iPhone — are baby monitors, security camera or just a way for a lazy photographer to catch an awesome sunrise from his bed.
There’s an SDK available so other developers can build in support, and the project is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. Amazingly, it costs just $85 to get in (the final retail price will be $130). And it looks good to go. With 22 days still left on the countdown, the Galileo has more than doubled its $100,000 goal. I’m sold.
Im telling you right now, that would help make some kick-ass fly films...just sayin'.
