Trip Report: Day Hiking and Rainbow Trout
Its been almost a year since I landed a Bow. Its been almost two years since I landed a fish over 8" here in Maryland. Don't get me wrong, they're there, just elusive. Well, that was changed yesterday...
The family and I decided this morning to head 30 minutes up I-97 to Savage Mill to hike a park we hadn't been to together before. It was our first hike as a family of three and Lilly's second fishing trip (she's been my good luck charm so far). Since Savage Mill was just stocked, I figured I'd bring my new Redington Classic Trout 4wt and put my Allen Fly Fishing Trout Reel on it and give it a shot. As we walked to path, water was low and tea stained but looked good compared to how the Middle Patuxent usually is.
We hiked for a good hour or two before we decided to plop down and have some lunch below the falls around the Mill. There is a sweet run after the falls followed by a deep pool that just looks like good water. Looks more like Smallmouth water than trout water but either way, there was fish in there. So, naturally, the rod was put together, and ready to go.
After not being able to walk three steps without seeing a grasshopper along the trail, I decided to make that my patterns of choice and immediately showed results. I couldn't keep the Bluegill and Fallfish away. All was fun, especially on the 4wt, but I wanted a trout. I grabbed a size 12 BH Olive Wooly Bugger and headed back to the run after lunch. After a few casts and decent hookups on some leaves, I thought I was snagged. Nope, Bow. I got it up to my feet after an awesome fight and me yelling like a little girl (so my wife could look of course) and boom, broke me off, at the knot...stupid knot. So I tied another Bugger on and began dead drifting it through the run again. After about 10 minutes an nothing, boom, fish on! Amazing fight again! Got this beautiful Bow in hand, measured in at 12.5" and was the biggest Bow I'd ever caught in Maryland, until the next fish. Yup, there was another, same technique, same run, this time it was 14" even, amazing fish. This one was my reward for releasing the last. Although it was stocked, it had color like any wild Bow I'd ever seen, as did the other 3 I got in hand. After losing 2 more fish, I landed my third Bow, 13.75" and fought like a tuna. All fish were released, only to probably be caught by some powerbait using redneck tomorrow, either way, I had the enjoyment of catching and releasing.
Third fish was the charm and I decided to go back to spending more quality time with the family. We had a blast, amazing day, amazing weather, amazing hike. I am so blessed to have the beautiful family that I do and to have the privilege of catching such amazing creatures.
God is good, and fishing is too (especially this time of year).

Trip Report: Gunpowder River 7/1...Its So Good to be Back!
So Z and I hit up the GP last Sunday and boy did we crush it. In the first 2 hours, I had landed 18 Fallfish, all on a Green Weenie. It was a good hike up to Zach's new secret spot so by the time we actually got in the water, with the air temp lingering in the mid 80's (at 8am), we were already wet. We put in after I snapped a few photos and vids and began our journey hitting up the banks and holes back to the car. The water was around 70cfs, really low, and the fish were pretty spooky. Using long leaders, we hit every bend and nook with only Fallfish to show for it. Finally, after being disturbed by some pretty obnoxious kids in a canoe, Zach tightened his line on a 5" Brownie with a Olive Wooly Bugger. Mokey was off our backs...finally. We waded a bit more and saw quite a few more fish but just couldn't get them to bite. We filmed a bit more, enjoyed our new Allen Trout 2 reels, and kept cool in the 53 deg F water.
We headed up to Backwater Angler where we ate lunch and picked up a bit of this and that. We talked to Theaux a bit and found out the shop will be moving in the next week or so. Not too far, actually back to their old location (which I'm honestly not quite sure of yet, but its close to the current store). After some good conversation about conservation on the GP, we headed up to the Trophy C&R section off of Falls Rd. We hopped in at the big bend where we spotted somewhere around a dozen Browns. We had quite a few follows but no lovin'. So we headed down to the pools. We spotted so many fish, I mean, big and small. Zach landed a nice Brown again, somewhere in the 6" range. I jumped two fish on a Green Weenie but lost both...I was hot to trot. Zach eased down to the next pool where he landed two more Browns, a 6" and 7" on a tandem rig (a Pheasant Tail as the anchor and a size 16 Copper Nymph as the dropper, one fish taken on each). I threw on the same rig and finally, after Zach's 5th Brown (around 6"), landed a nice 7" Brown in the last pool before Whale Rock. We waded some more, past the Falls Rd bridge, where we fished the small pools and I landed a 5" Brown, bringing us to a total of 7 for the day.
I landed one more Fallfish and a White Sucker in the 9" range when we decided it was time to call it a day. Drenched in sweat and slightly dehydrated, we loaded up, ate a quick snack, recapped the day and made the 45 minute drive home. Overall, for our first time in almost 3 months to the GP, we called it a great day. I would love to get some of you guys up there to fish, I know a few of our followers have expressed interest. Gunpowder River...Epic Slaying of the Trout
Awesome day, crushed the trout. Zach and I got in the water by 8am right at the Prettyboy Dam. I threw on a size 14 Olive Wooly Bugger (classic fly selection) and Zach a size 12 Green Weenie. I had a hit my first cast as did Zach. I had a hit my third cast, as did Zach. Fifth cast, we both had good Browns, first 5 minutes in the water and slay fest had begun. Boom...

Oh Yea, About the Breeches...
So Zach and I hit up the Yellow Breeches on Sunday. We stopped over at Yellow Breeches Outfitters to get our PA licenses and check the hatch chart they have on the front porch. We crossed the street and hit up the Run where we spotted numerous fish anywhere from 10-24". A few old timers were nymphing the Run with little success. We fished there for a bit without any luck as well before we started into the creek. The report said that Tan Caddis, some Sulphurs, and Terrestrials were working best. We tried all those plus buggers, nymphs, and midges. I ended up pulling in 2 nice Browns (11" and 9") on the midge patterns, one a Griffiths Gnat and the other a size 24 Zebra Midge with a red indicator. I also caught a nice Brown ("10) on an MK Caddis. We stayed in the C&R stretch from the Run at Boiling Springs down to Allenberry Playhouse. Guys all around us were bringing in nice trout and one dude even brought in a hoss that was probably around 20", definitely made his day. Zach was only able to bring in some Fallfish and a River Chub until he threw on, just for shits and giggles, a Green Weenie. On the first cast he had around 6 trout on the chase. For a few casts they just followed until BOOM, a Brownie around 14" took and then BOOM, Zach set the hook like Kevin Van Dam and broke it off. After tying another tippet on and another Green Weenie, he had a trout, I shit you not, around 24" chase it down but fail to take. Another nice 12-14" trout did take though and good ol' Kevin came out again and BOOM broke it off. We had a lot of fun but unfortunately, after paying $60 for an out-of-state license Zach came up troutless. But, we shall return, and soon it will be. Here's one of the trout:

Gunpowder River Trip 7-2-11
Successful trip... One 13" 'Bow, Two Browns a 10" and 8". Zach got two Browns as well. Check out the pics below. Water was low at around 66 FPS but still make for some great fishing. The 'Bow and bigger Brown were caught on a Black sz 10 Bugger and the smaller Brown was caught on a sz 16 MK Caddis (my own custom design).

Fishing Trip: Gunpowder River-Take 3 + Updates
After being washed out last weekend due to the opening of all four gates on the Pretty Boy Dam, which we wont speak of, just seems to upset us since we only saw one fish all day and it didn't even make its way onto our hooks, we decided to try and redeem ourselves. The wives went away for the weekend, perfect opportunity for some great fishing. So Zach and I departed Annapolis for the Gunpowder at our usual time this past Saturday and were able to dip our feet in the water at around 8am. We packed our lunches and I put my gear (including my new Simms Freestone wading boots) into the Jeep the night before just to make sure we get up there on time and can crunch as many fish into the time we had. We jumped in about a mile downstream from the Pretty Boy Dam off Falls Rd. We waded down what we have both decided is the most beautiful section of the river. We fished through a lot of pressure, at least 2 fishermen every 200 yards or so and had one Brown under our belts which I caught on a Black Wooly Bugger right behind a nice rock sitting in the middle of the stream. We got back to the car and headed over to another stretch off Monkton Rd. We fished about a half mile of the river and only had one fish to claim from that stretch, a nice sized White Sucker Zach actually false hooked. We decided to grab lunch and make a move to another spot we really like off of Blue Mount Rd. (which we found with the help of the awesome guys at Backwater Angler Fly Shop) to try out a feeder creek that runs into the Gunpowder. We ended up wading about a mile or more upstream since we got into some good sized River Chub, Fallfish, and a Pumpkinseed on all different colors of Wooly Buggers, Zonkers, and Clouser Minnows. We had over a dozen fish each when Zach hooked into an awesome Brown. Check out the pics:
We fished the feeder run for most of the day since we got into some great fish. After walking back to the Gunpowder, we decided to fish downstream a bit from the feeder creek and ended up getting into/fishing the day with some wild brook trout, two of which we took on a double header. All around great day, the next trip is planned for 2 weeks from now but who knows what we'll get into between now and then...Check out the pics of the final fish and the scenes of the day:
Backwoods Update: My little bro Ryan headed down to Colin's pond (Bucks Pond) to fish with Colin and the Backwoods guys this past weekend and sent me some pics...check it out:
