Description: South Valley Anglers, Austin Green Photography, and Crooked Creek Holler present the Ladies Musky Meetup on the New River in Southwest Virginia, hosted by Katie Blizzard (The Uncommon Angler) and Abbi Bagwell (Flymen Fishing Company). This is first hosted trip of its kind--ladies exclusive, all inclusive, hosted musky trip on the fly! Float down the ancient New River, in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains, catching trophy musky on the fly! Enjoy luxury lodging along with food and drinks by Bull & Bones. Guides Josh Laferty, Brent Perkey, and Ken Trail (Rock On Charters) are some of the most experienced musky fishermen in the entire region. Come get away, and put some Esox in the boat!

Upon arrival on Nov. 3rd, the ladies will be transported to the house on Claytor Lake (New River) outside of Blacksburg, VA. The meet and greet will be conducted with giveaways, wine & cheese, and dinner/desert. There is a movie theatre setup in the house and we will run a musky or pike film to wrap up each night. Breakfast will be served early, followed by a full day on the water (lunch on river). Dinner and drinks will be catered by Bull & Bones. This schedule will be repeated for the 2nd day on the water. Breakfast will be served the morning of day 3, followed by closing gear giveaway. Guests will depart on Sunday, November 6th, but will be given the option to book additional days on the water at a discounted rate.

This article is designed to be a quick-start guide for the beginner, a refresher course for the intermediate, and a checklist for the more experienced photographer.

Through filming and photographing fly fishing productions with The Uncommon Angler and environmentally concerned documentaries, I've racked up a great deal of experience in the field.

When approached by Flymen to create a post for their blog, I immediately knew I needed to share my photography experience with their readers.

After brainstorming an extensive list of the most crucial tips I could come up with and choosing 5 to elaborate on, I then asked Bryan Gregson, Director of Photography at Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures, to read over my list and choose 5 more tips for me to write about.

I wish to see every hard-working outdoor photographer succeed in capturing his or her vision, and this is the best advice I can offer for getting started.

Possibly one of the most photographed days, one that none of us will ever forget not only from the insanely amazing fishing, but by the way it was documented.

Day 5 - June 23rd

Our alarms were set for about 7:30am so we could be up and ready for an 8am breakfast at the deli...but I don't think a single one of those alarms went off. Most of us were up around 7am as we all knew from checking out weather reports the previous night, it was bound to be a great day. The winds were due to stay down to almost nothing all day and the clouds were going to burn off early giving us open sun for almost the entire day. This not only meant that conditions would be ideal for fishing, but the water would be warming up, bringing the carp in skinnier for a meal. 

As we made our way down towards McDonough's Deli, everyone had a good pep in their step courtesy of a 1 knot steady wind, 65 F air temp, and picturesque morning. We met up with Kevin, Steve, and Austin at the deli and had yet another amazing breakfast. We paired up and setup fishing partners for the day...Luis and Mario, Joel and Cheryl, and Austin and I. Luis and Mario would be fishing with Steve, Joel and Cheryl would be fishing with Austin, and Austin and I would be fishing with Kevin.

We decided to do this post slightly different. Austin Green of The Uncommon Angler decided to write up his perspective so we could merge the two together (mine and his), two separate perspectives from two different boats. Hopefully this works, let us know what you think. Day 4 - June 22nd

Morgan's Perspective -

It was nice to sleep in a bed for the first time on Beaver Island. The day started out around 7:30 when not only my internal alarm clock thought it was time to get the day going, but my excitement had built to an uncontrollable level. You know those mornings when you wake up and your ready to take on the world from 0-60 faster than you can sneeze? Yea, it was one of those mornings. That seemed to be the theme throughout the house.

Breakfast -

We all woke up around the same time and headed downstairs in preparation to head down the street to McDonough's Deli for breakfast with the guides and anglers. The menu at McDonough's is enough to make Guy Fieri drool, seriously, best meals EVER (thats coming from the son of a professional caterer). After a plate of deliciousness and cup of joe, we were ready to kickoff day one of guided fishing and get on the boats.

We headed back to the house and prepped our gear. The six of us paired up to meet with our guides. Luis and I would be fishing together today, Austin with Mario, and Joel with Cheryl. All the gear came together quickly, except for Austin's waders. He had busted out his Simms a few days prior to the trip so I brought my backup pair for him to use...unfortunately those leaked just as bad as his. Evan M of Feather-Craft, as I said before, is a stand-up guy. He lent Austin his new Patagonia waders despite him (Evan) leaving that day to head back home to St. Louis. After sorting everything out, the guides pulled up to The Fisherman's House around 9am and we tossed our gear into the backs of their trucks.

Day 3 - June 21st

As with any fishing trip or vacation, sleeping in is a pretty tough task to accomplish. We all woke up right around 7:30am to a cool, sunny morning on the lawn of The Fisherman's House. Four bodies in an 8-person tent was perfect, it kept the tent warm while also giving everyone enough space for the night. The air was crisp and the day had already started to shape up to be perfect.

We all changed and threw on some warmer clothes before walking down the street to the deli for breakfast. We soon found out we were in for a treat from that point on when it came to eating food at or from the deli. A cup of coffee and a breakfast fit for a king was all it took for us to get ready for a day of fishing and exploration on foot around the island.

TLTFF Beaver Island '14 - Days 1 & 2

So days one and two were pretty much travel days so I figured they'd be easiest to just pair together. I have to preface this strain of posts that will be coming out over the next few days to journal our trip with this...this was one of the best experiences of my life. Period. I don't write well, by any means, but I hope these posts help give you a taste of what we experienced on this trip, giving you an appetite for experiencing it for yourself one day.

A big thanks goes out to those of you who followed along via our social media outlets and through the hashtag #tltffbeaverisland14 we used to timeline and manifest the trip. An even bigger thanks goes out to Evan from Feather-Craft and CarpTrip.com for helping us get our ducks in a row and guiding us through the hosting process and Kevin Morlock, Steve Martinez, and Austin Adduci of Indigo Guide Service for giving us all a trip to remember forever and pass on stories of to our grandchildren. Thank you Bill and Tammy for opening up The Fisherman's House to us pilgrims and for making it so special, something that ties the entire trip together. Thank you to the people of Beaver Island for being so welcoming to us fisherman's antics and appreciating our overall love for what your home has to offer. Last but not least, thank you Austin Green for photographing and filming the trip, without you this trip would have been missing a certain little something...I hope all of our readers enjoy your images as much as we enjoyed your company.

Luis and I started to plan this hosted trip right after Luis returned from his trip last year and Evan from Feather-Craft and CarpTrip.com asked him if he would be interested in hosting a trip himself. After a few conversations and debates, the decision was made and it was time to put together logistics. Luis handled about 90% of it and deserves a large pat on the back for his planning genius (he does doit for a living though so there really was no better man for the job). Mario Garza, a long-time follower of the blog and one of our favorite fly tiers, was our first angler. It was all coming together. Two more anglers, Joel and Cheryl signed on filling two more spots and leaving one more to fill. We got into the 30 day countdown and there was still one spot left to fill and a lot of fine-tuning to do.

Austin Green of Austin Green Photography and The Uncommon Angler hopped on board as our last angler and a big weight was lifted off our shoulders. Over the course of a few more meetings and phone calls, planning was complete. June 19th couldn't have come soon enough as a long week of work seemed to be stuck on slow-mo speed. Launch day finally came and the car was packed.

Day 1 - June 19th

I picked up Luis around 10am and we headed up to Baltimore to pick up Austin. We quickly loaded up the car at Austin's place and started the 7 hour trek to Lorain, OH (right outside of Cleveland) where we would split the trip in half and spend the night with Luis' family.

Today we woke up bright and early for final day of guided fishing with Indigo Guide Service and last day on Beaver Island. Today will be a half day, hopefully we can get into some fish! We have a half day of travel ahead of us today as we make leg two of the trip up. Today we trek up from Cleveland, OH to Chralevoix, MI and then hop on a plane over to Beaver Island. A little bit of fishing today hopefully as well.

And We're Off...The TLTFF Crew Beaver Island Bound

After a year of planning, a little bit of stress, and a lot of bit of excitement...the day is here. (We)'re shoved/shoving off this am and making the first leg of our 800+ mile trip up to Charlevoix, MI to hop on a puddle jumper over to Beaver Island, MI.

We will be spending the night with some of Luis' family tonight in Cleveland, OH and waking up early tomorrow morning to make leg two and head to Charlevoix. The bags are packed and gear checked, its go time. Here's a brief itinerary...

Day 1- Today (19th), will be all travel from Annapolis, MD to Cleveland, OH with me, Luis, and Austin Green.

Day 2- Friday (20th), travel up to Charlevoix, MI from Cleveland, OH and meet up with Mario Garza somewhere around Detroit, MI. All four of us will hop on a small plane (either Island Air or Fresh Air) in Charlevoix to Beaver Island. We will setup camp and fish on our own.

Day 3- Saturday (21st), first official day of the trip. We will fish on our own in the morning and then run errands as we prepare for the final two anglers to arrive. We will check in to The Fisherman's House where we will be staying the next few nights. We will have a meet and greet and cookout that night.

Day 4- Sunday (22nd), first day of guided fishing provided by the gentleman of Indigo Guide Service. Fishing all day long.

Day 5- Monday (23rd), second day of guided fishing. Fishing all day long.

Day 6- Tuesday (24th), third and final day of guided fishing. Half day of fishing and then pack up/check out. We will leave Beaver Island via flight again to Charlevoix. Once we orient ourselves and prepare for the trek home, we will decide if we will make the straight shot or stop half way again.

During the fall of 2013 The Uncommon Angler crew gathered in New Hampshire for the first of many trips to come. Although the numbers of fish caught were few, all had a good time. The outcome was another trip planned for the spring of 2014. After a brutally cold and snowy winter in the Northeast, I was eager to begin chasing fish once again, especially with good friends.

Early spring angling was more difficult than the previous season due to the seemingly never-ending winter. Pond fishing was exceptional once air temperatures began to rise above 50 degrees. River fishing was not an option until about the last two weeks of May due to continual runoff.  This was a difficult circumstance for me because I enjoy fishing rivers and streams more than any other type of water. Although still waters and spring hatches are enjoyable, I love finding a particularly fine stretch of riffles or a nice deep pool to cast into. Trout, bass, pike, and salmon are some of the species I like to pursue most in rivers. Having knowledge of each species and the types of water that each inhabits is essential to consistently finding fish throughout the year. Spring is the prime time to find any species in every body of water. This was the goal for the spring ’14 Uncommon Angler trip, set for the last week of May.

T-5 Days Till #TLTFFBeaverIsland14

So the countdown is loud in my head...getting through this week is going to be like being an 8 year old waiting for 7am on Christmas Day on Christmas Eve night. The lists are made and I've already started to pack the car.

The trip will be the 19th-25th. The official dates of the Carp Trip is the 21st-24th. Luis, Austin Green of Austin Green Photography, and I will leave on the 19th and begin the trek up to Cleveland, OH where we will spend the night at Luis' sister's place. On the 20th we will wake up early and finish the last leg to Charlevoix, MI where somewhere along the way we will pick up Maria Garza. We will then hop on our puddle jumper and fly over to Beaver Island.

I will do my best to keep posts up from the island but I can't guarantee anything. I will for sure have an ongoing live stream from the island of our Instagram account as well as live updates rolling out through our Twitter and Facebook accounts. All week long the anglers and TLTFF Crew will be posting pictures with the hashtag #TLTFFBeaverIsland14 to help you track everything down.

It looks like Cam of TFM and the #BeaverBash2014 crew had a great time despite challenging weather, we cannot wait to get up to BI and throw some line with the guides of Indigo. In the meantime, check out the report from last years trip.
