Daily Reel...'50 Best Tailwaters to Fly Fish'
In a new book out this summer, co-owner and founder Terry Gunn of Lees Ferry Anglers Fly Shop is talking all things tailwaters. The book, "50 Best Tailwaters to Fly Fish," expounds on information you need to be successful on each river. Not only do tailwaters allow trout fishing year round, they are also important economically to the sport of fly fishing.
Featuring local experts and contributing authors, the book is a helpful resource not only on each tailwater, but also provides insight by the person who’s wading boots have been in the water for a long time.
This video highlights one such tailwater, the Colorado River at Lees Ferry. Near the base of the Glen Canyon Dam, this tailwater is known as the "World’s Largest Spring Creek.”
"50 Best Tailwaters to Fly Fish" will be out on the bookshelves in late summer 2013.

Last week a good old northeaster settled in on Maryland and lingered for what seemed an eternity, dumping rain and northeast winds on most of Maryland and especially the coastal areas. Usually a blow like this in early fall is the signal for many of our migratory and resident fish species to contemplate a change in behavior and location. Summer migrants in the bay and ocean waters have bid us goodbye for the most part and coldwater species such as Tautog and Black Sea Bass are coming in closer to shore. Freshwater species are starting to think about beefing up for the colder water that is ahead and for fish such as Smallmouth Bass, Walleye and trout that enjoy colder water, this is the best of times. It is the best of times for fishermen as well, as active fish present more fishing opportunities. Trout fishermen will be enjoying the fall stocking of 24,000 trout in trout management waters which will certainly offers increased opportunity. This is a marvelous time of the year to be in the outdoors so make sure to enjoy it as much as possible.
Fishermen who enjoy fishing in the lower Susquehanna River and upper most reach of the bay have been dealing with major water releases from the Conowingo Dam and cloudy water conditions. Water temperatures are falling and as soon as fishermen can find some clearer water, fishing should begin to resemble a typical fall pattern of finding Striped Bass chasing bait in the channel areas. Soft plastic jigs such as Bass Assassins are a good bet to begin with; surface poppers and crankbaits like the classic Rat-L-Trap are also good choices. Rob Enslin holds up a "keeper" that he caught in the Susquehanna just before the northeaster last week.

Maryland Fall Trout Stocking to Begin in October

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service is forecasting an early October start for the annual fall trout stocking program.
“Stocking dates and locations are dependent on water flow, temperatures and ground conditions at the delivery sites,” said DNR Inland Fisheries Chief Don Cosden. “Based on current conditions, we expect to begin stocking fish into popular ponds, creeks and rivers as early as the second week of October.”
DNR expects to stock about 26,000 one-pound rainbow and golden trout, 1,000 one-pound brown trout, and 150 two- to three-pound rainbow and golden trout throughout the State.
Popular locations should include the North Branch of the Potomac River, Bear Creek, Big Elk Creek, Blair’s Valley Lake, Deer Creek, Great Seneca Creek, Greenbelt Lake, Gunpowder Falls, Lake Artemesia, Morgan Run, Patapsco River, Wheatley Lake, Town Creek and Tuckahoe Creek.
Staff will post stocking information on the DNR Fisheries website and on the recorded DNR Trout Hotline (800-688-3467, press 2) as the program progresses.

As part of Spring Creek: Ranchers, Anglers, Water and Trout, I recently spent two weeks in Colorado profiling Shannon Skelton. Shannon is the President and CEO of CFI Global Fisheries Management, a comprehensive fisheries management company based out of Fort Collins, Colorado. CFI specializes in stream restoration and does a lot of spring creek enhancement and restoration. Shannon and CFI were breaking ground on spring creek restoration project outside of Gunnison. They invited me along to see how the project starts and next year I’ll go back and see how the project has developed. The idea is to witness first hand the difference the restoration efforts have made to the fishery. While in Colorado, CFI contracted my company Cinema Digital Productions to produce a short corporate film for them and show what CFI is all about. We were fortunate enough to shoot on Ryan Wood’s Sweetwood Ranch and Jerry Allen’s Fish On Ranch as well as the Round Mountain Ranch with Brian Smith from Hall and Hall Partners. There are a few shots of the spring creek project from outside of Gunnison, however the majority of that footage will be featured in Spring Creek: Ranchers, Anglers, Water and Trout. These small corporate films are how I fund my larger Spring Creek documentary. Sponsors help but they don’t provide ANY cash and trust me you need a shitload of cake to fund a 3 to 4 year film project like Spring Creek. I’ve been holding out on KICKSTARTER and will continue to try and do so for as long as I can. Thanks again to every one involved.

The upcoming weekend will be an extended one for many families as folks get together to not only honor those who have sacrificed so much that we may enjoy the freedoms we have but to also get together for family outings such as fishing. The Ocean City area is hopping with all kinds of fishing opportunities, freshwater fishing for largemouth bass, chain pickerel, trout and bluegills is very good and striped bass, croakers and white perch will aim to please bay fisherpersons this weekend. Pack up the kids and give that local pond a try or fish the bay or ocean and enjoy some time together.

Blog of Note: True North Trout
Not only does this blog have a super legit heading photo, but this blog is the definition of legit! Unlike most of the other blogs we've featured, True North Trout has some different pages that nobody else really offers. I started to read TNT about 2 weeks ago when I saw it on someone else's blogroll. Man, what a find. I've been to TNT every day since, sometimes twice. Definitely bumped an old site out and made its way into the dirty dozen lineup of the bookmarks bar on the computer. The content is similar to what we offer here at TLTFF but with a different perspective and some different substance. Articles include a wide range of content from tying flies with April Vokey to reviewing products, books, etc. Videos that have been put up have been featured as Daily Reels here on the blog and definitely bring smiles to my face. Here's a little bit about TNT that you probably want to know...
True North Trout strives to be a one-stop resource for information and insight on fly angling for trout, char and related salmonids along the storied waters of Northern Michigan and the Upper Great Lakes bioregion. Content comes from a variety of sources, but includes contributions from field editors and writers who represent, and are active in, the fly fishing life.
True North Trout also provides links and referrals to other quality sources of information via a links resource, and provides a bulletin board service where anglers can share and discuss their experiences on and off the water.
If you are interested in contributing to True North Trout, feel free to contact the editors at admin (at) truenorthtrout (dot) com. Contributions can take the form of articles, interviews, how-to and instructional content, profiles of rivers, people, fly patterns, etc., or contributions of creative nonfiction, poetry, photography, or art.

True North Trout is edited by Brian Kozminski (a/k/a “Koz”). Koz is an obsessive angler, fly tier, and defender of quality water and public access. He has been deeply involved in Trout Unlimited, including leadership roles with the Miller VanWinkle Chapter. He is a GreenFish ambassador and promotes the use of correct technique in catch-and-release fly fishing. He lives with his family in Hemingway country in northern Michigan where he can often be found on the water or at the tying bench. In his paid life he works in the service industry.
Jordan J. Lindberg
Jordan J. Lindberg is the founder and digital publisher of True North Trout. An avid fly angler and fly tier, Jordan was born and grew up in Traverse City, graduating from the Traverse City Senior High in 1987. After stints at Albion College, Michigan State University, and the University of Missouri-Columbia, he took at teaching and research position for almost ten years in the philosophy department at Central Michigan University. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy. He lives with his family in East Bay Township. Currently he serves as Executive Vice President of eFulfillment Service, Inc., ownsStardust Memorials, LLC, and is the publisher and editor of True North Trout.
Bryon Anderson
Bryon Anderson moved to Michigan from Missouri in 1997 and quickly discovered that he belonged here. He is a passionate (some say obsessive) fly fisherman, fly tier, and fly rod builder. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, he has worked as a high school teacher and long-haul truck driver, and now works for the State of Michigan as a Disability Examiner. He is the proud father of twins and resides in Holland, MI. He is a contributing editor of True North Trout.
Ted Kraimer
Ted Kraimer is a fly fishing guide living in Traverse City. He takes his customers to many of our great local waters in pursuit of the diverse fishery. With close to 20-years of fly fishing experience, his avocation eventually became his vocation, and he operates Current Works Guide Service, LLC. Working in a fly shop while in college gave him the opportunity to teach the sport, and has been an FFF Certified Casting instructor the past ten years. While not on the water with customers you can find Ted fishing himself, continuing to look for that edge, or at his vise tying flies. Ted is a fly designer for Rainy’s Flies. Through his work with T|N|T and on his own site, Ted contributes a fishing report on many of the local rivers in the area. Ted is a field editor and contributor for True North Trout.
