DIY...Rotary Fly Dryer

In an attempt to bring more content to our DIY section of the blog (tab above), I've decided to start featuring one DIY project every two or so weeks (if feasible). In order to do so, we need requests for what you want us to make! You can check out the DIY tab above for more info.

Our latest project is for those of you who still appreciate good ol' head cement, epoxy, or super glue for tying flies and don't have the time to watch your flies back or head dry as you turn it or move it in an attempt to get an even dry. I have had a fly dryer on my Bass Pro wish list for month but have never decided it a good time to throw down $55 for it. So I set out on a quest to make a fly dryer for under $20, over half of the cost of the BPS Rotary Fly Dryer...

'A Peak at the Process'

A peak at the process...

Fairly regularly I get asked how I go about tying 'a crap load' of flies.  Th simple answer is that I break it down in to smaller more manageable parts.   This particular order was for six dozen Johnny Darters, and here are a few shots of the process.

First thing is to collect all the materials for the pattern in question.  I then place the materials I will need for the first hook in front of me and prep them.  For this particulare pattern I plucked the Grizzly Marabou, separated out single strands of tan yarn, and founs the end of a ball of Polar Chenille.

Working through the back hook I will grab more materials as needed, but generally that is only needed if I lose or break one of the prep materials.  I then prep the materials for the front hook and lay them out.  For this pattern that was a Australian possum hide, three and a quarter inch rubber legs, and red bead chain eyes.

Then I finish up the flies and smile at the pile in front of me!

Fly Product: Tube Fly Tech Swim Tanks

For those of you that have seen me at the show the last few weeks you may have noticed the new addition of the swim tank to my setup...kind of hard not to with something this cool! Many have talked with me about it at the shows and taken the site down to check it out but I have not yet mentioned it here for those that have not seen it in person.

The tank is a Swim Tank from Tony DiBenedetto Jr at Tube Fly Tech. More than being a nice part of the display at the shows, this tank has been an invaluable tool for me as I take flies through the design phase. Since I do not have a clear river running through my back yard this tank is a fantastic way for me to confirm that the intended action for a fly successfully translates from thought, to paper, and finally to hook.

Joann Michael's...Your My Hero(es)

Im a frugal guy, not afraid to share it. Along with my frugality comes coupons. When I started to tie flies, I got tired of the ridiculous prices fly shops were charging for fly tying material and I knew there had to be a cheaper way to get tying shit. Thats when I wandered into Michael's and had an epiphany. I thought, "holy shit Morgan, this store carries everything you need", well except hooks, but thats besides the point. Then I checked out Joann Fabrics, same deal, good stuff for awesome prices! Craft stores are the shit! You got something to say...I didn't think so.

Anyway, not only are their prices in line with savings...but they both have weekly coupons, that pretty much make some of the stuff free. I mean, seriously, check the Michael's Weekly Ad right now...

The Project is Complete...well almost

Hey everybody, happy Monday. So I worked pretty hard on my fly bench project this weekend between study sessions. I have plenty of pictures for everyone and I'll post them below. The grand total for the project as said before was under $80, awesome. It took about 4 hours total to get the whole thing together. I used my wife's grandfathers woodworking workshop for a good amount of it because he has every tool imaginable and, well, I don't. It would have been easier to complete at home if I had more room and a few more tools...one day. Anyway. Here's how it turned out, let me know what you think...the final product didn't differ too much from the plans.

As you can tell, the top right and right corner aren't finished but thats because I'm working on figuring out what would best go there...I'm definitely going to put more thread and spool holders on the top right area.
