Instagram Fly Swap Part 2A

UPDATE: The business card reading "Morgan's Flies" actually has some flies tied by Mr. Nick Murray of the blog The Man in the Striped Pajamas, his flies are super rad and I failed to give him credit, apologies Nick, awesome flies!

Here's a follow-up post about the First Instragram Fly Swap. Of the original 9 participants, we have 5 that completed their flies, 1 that dropped out and 3 that plan to finish up in the coming weeks. Instead of waiting, Morgan, our host, distributed the first set of flies. These are shown below with tying instructions here. This will be a long post, so let's get started.

David, @phishtitz, of "Blurred Focus" produced a great three-fold brochure to deliver his flies. Definitely the most creative presentation thus far for the fly swap. No recipes were provided, but from his descriptions and pictures, one could possibly figure out the recipes.

Mario, @mgoblue_mg, emailed pictures of his ties with recipes which are shown below. The trout flies are the Foxee Clouser and Bunny Leech.

 The bass flies from @mgoblue_mg are the Triple Double and the Single Fly Cray.

Mike, @mike_phazeone, of the blog "Dub the Thorax" tied the Flashabou Midge for his trout flies and two original streamer patters for the bass flies. I'll included Mike's descriptions in quotes with the recipes.

"I tie these in sizes 18-24. I kept this one at an 18 since I'm not sure where you guys can fish. It can also pass as an attractor nymph pattern in faster water in this size. It does very well for me on the limestone strams here in PA, especially in the winter. I also tie them in red."

Mike writes, "I fish a lot for bass in farm ponds, and the Perkiomen Creek which is right near my house in PA. Purple has always been a killer largemouth color for me, and Chartreuse always works the best on smallies in the streams. I combined the two colors late last year with great results for both species. Slap these down next to some structure, or fish them fast and deep with a sink tip line. Try Streamer #1 (top) early in the morning."

Finally, @ginclear (yours truly), of the Gin Clear blog tied some tried and true patterns. The Klinkhammer emerger has been one of my more productive trout flies. I've even caught bass and pan fish with this pattern. For bass, I tied Skip Morris's Skip's Dad pattern. Skip has a bunch of great bass and pan fish flies on his DVD titled "The Art of Tying the Bass Fly".

That's a lot of flies. I wanted to get this post up with the pictures before fishing any of these beauties (knowing I would probably loose them).

Oh Yea, About the Breeches...

So Zach and I hit up the Yellow Breeches on Sunday. We stopped over at Yellow Breeches Outfitters to get our PA licenses and check the hatch chart they have on the front porch. We crossed the street and hit up the Run where we spotted numerous fish anywhere from 10-24". A few old timers were nymphing the Run with little success. We fished there for a bit without any luck as well before we started into the creek. The report said that Tan Caddis, some Sulphurs, and Terrestrials were working best. We tried all those plus buggers, nymphs, and midges. I ended up pulling in 2 nice Browns (11" and 9") on the midge patterns, one a Griffiths Gnat and the other a size 24 Zebra Midge with a red indicator. I also caught a nice Brown ("10) on an MK Caddis. We stayed in the C&R stretch from the Run at Boiling Springs down to Allenberry Playhouse. Guys all around us were bringing in nice trout and one dude even brought in a hoss that was probably around 20", definitely made his day. Zach was only able to bring in some Fallfish and a River Chub until he threw on, just for shits and giggles, a Green Weenie. On the first cast he had around 6 trout on the chase. For a few casts they just followed until BOOM, a Brownie around 14" took and then BOOM, Zach set the hook like Kevin Van Dam and broke it off. After tying another tippet on and another Green Weenie, he had a trout, I shit you not, around 24" chase it down but fail to take. Another nice 12-14" trout did take though and good ol' Kevin came out again and BOOM broke it off. We had a lot of fun but unfortunately, after paying $60 for an out-of-state license Zach came up troutless. But, we shall return, and soon it will be. Here's one of the trout:
