A PUBLIC LANDS FILM

Phoebe Bean grew up on the water, fly fishing the river systems found in the backcountry of the Rocky Mountains. Her loyal Griffon, Ginger, has been stream side with her since Phoebe was 11 years old. With Ginger in her senior years, Phoebe went in search of a pup. That search led her to Wildrum Kennels.

The Wolframs have been breeding sporting dogs for the better part of 15 years. Providing families with a pup has led to some lifelong friendships and as you can imagine, some pretty endearing stories have unfolded. This is one of those stories.

What seems like a friendship born of a pup, the true genesis of this story belongs to America's Public Lands. The ethos that we must cling to in all of this, is that there are a million other stories just like this one.

Man, I hesitate to write this, because I don’t wanna cause any more economic harm to the islands’ charter fleet, by, well, saying it publicly… but I think it’s become so obvious that most striper fishermen already know it… 

The historically significant striped bass fishery that made Martha’s Vineyard (and Nantucket) the iconic fishing destination it is, just ain’t what it used to be.

Gateway Trout Unlimited is proud to announce it's 2nd Annual Fundraising Dinner which will be held on Friday, February 17th 2017 at TAPAWINGO GOLF COURSE in Sunset Hills, Missouri. It is shaping up to be an exciting evening filled with raffles, silent auctions, food, and drinks.  

Our featured speaker for the evening is none other than Chris Wood, President & CEO of TROUT UNLIMITED.

To kick off the promotion of the fundraising dinner, we are offering three great raffles. The goal is to create awareness of the event and to give those who cannot attend an opportunity to contribute to our fundraising efforts. Funds raised will go to expand Trout In The Classroom, fund Kids Fishing Events and to have the resources necessary to support current & upcoming conservation efforts in Missouri.

You do not need to be present at our fundraising dinner to win the raffles on this page. In fact, you do not even have to be a member of Trout Unlimited to participate. This raffle is open to all who wish to help our fundraising efforts.

Thomas Barzilay Freund, Michael Kamsky, and Faulkner Wilson are the people behind the film Between the Lines. Over the years, these three childhood friends from New York City have fished together and documented their adventures on film. Although they’ve had the opportunity to explore many different fisheries together, they feel a deep connection to the striped bass of the Long Island Sound which they have relentlessly pursued over the years. They are all currently freshmen in college: Thomas at Bowdoin, Michael at Princeton, and Faulkner at Wake Forest. They began fishing for stripers together in high school.

For the final months of their senior year at the Dalton School, the students were given the chance to work on an independent project of their choosing. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to do something on a topic they deeply cared about. The three decided to make a film about fly fishing for striped bass, with a focus on portraying stripers as the gamefish they believe them to be, and advocating for catch-and-release practices among recreational anglers.

Between the Lines is about their quest for large, fly-catchable striped bass in their home waters. The entire film was shot during the spring and summer of 2016 in Connecticut’s coastal rivers and along the rocky shorelines of the Long Island Sound.

Capt. John McMurray of One More Cast Charters sits on a pedestal for me. He's one of the most knowledgable captains and conservationists I've had the privilege to know. With all jokes on recent national politics aside, the slogan "Make Fishing Great Again" can hold a lot more truths than what is initially perceived. John makes that pretty obvious in his recent grand slam of an article that was sent along to me to be shared.

From a fishing standpoint, this is important and from a conservation standpoint, this information is paramount. I'm going to hand over the reigns to John and let his blogging speak for itself. Enjoy...

Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Symposium

The Symposium will kick off at 9am with a presentation by Capt. John McMurray of One More Cast Light Tackle Charters.  Capt. McMurray has a long history of participating in fisheries management, and a lot of experience on the water.  John will provide his perspectives on fisheries management policies and how the relate to his success on the water. John is a Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council member and a proxy to the ASMFC.   

Following John, Michael Luisi from Maryland DNR will provide an update on striped bass management, and give an update on what ASMFC is working on as we look to the future.  

Following Luisi's update, David Sikorski, CCA Maryland's Government Relations Committee Chairman will kick off a discussion of menhaden management, and provide CCA's position on the upcoming changes through Amendment 3 to the Atlantic Menhaden Fisheries Management Plan.   Following this presentation will be an open discussion with the morning's presenters to discuss anything and everything related to striped bass and menhaden management.  

After Lunch, Michael Malpezzi, Maryland DNR's Artificial Reef Coordinator will update everyone on what the Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative has done in 2016, and talk about upcoming projects.   We will end the day talking about the importance of benthic habitat to fish populations, and learning about ways the regions many stakeholder groups can benefit the health of the bay by working together to build marine habitat. 

A FREE lunch and refreshments are included for all attendees.

Washington's New Steelhead License Plate by DeYoung

Washington’s newest license plate has been unveiled, and it features a gorgeous close-up of a steelhead in its spawning colors.

Drawn by Michigan artist Derek DeYoung, the plates will be available for sale through the state Department of Licensing starting in January.
