This video’s title was supposed to be “Bow River Nymphing”. However, as we floated the Bow River with David Blair (owner of Fish Tales Fly Shop in Calgary, Alberta) & Terry Johnson (Head Guide at the shop) “38 Minutes” came as a result of Terry being incredibly economical with his instruction and demonstration. From the time we cracked the camera and drone cases to shoot Terry showing & discussing his Bow River nymphing set-up, through to demonstrating how and where to fish the nymphing rig (all completed with on-stream discussion/demonstration while landing three nice rainbow trout) the total time was 38 minutes. When you travel to fly fish, you always hope to meet a guide such as Terry – someone who is clear and concise with tactics that work. This is a great video to help you understand the basic Bow River nymph set-up. It’s a set-up you can use on most waters. It’s effective and hopefully this video encourages you to simply have a go. Trout will eventually give you some love if you stick to it and heed Terry’s advice. :)  jensenflyfishing.com

This is PART 2 of our time with Mark & Adam of Oldman Outfitters Guide Co in southern Alberta. We got lucky on the drone shots in Part 1, and as the day wore on, something just seemed imminent. Something interesting, unique, wonderful always happens every day you're on the water with a fly rod or camera in your hands and this was no different. My spidey-senses wouldn't leave me alone and as we drift and came down the bank to find a wondrous back water, I knew we had to stop. Here's why.

We were invited to join Mark & Adam, brothers who own Oldman Outfitters Guide Co in southern Alberta. We've been trying to fish with them for a couple of seasons and we finally co-ordinated schedules. The winter, spring, and early summer in Alberta (2016) have been hot, sunny, and dry - all the way up to the day before we got together! As fates had it, the weather tanked on us and massive cells and heavy winds welcomed us. This marks our first flight on the water with our new drone and represents what we hope to include in future videos - a strong sense of place and location about the fishing. We got lucky with the fish capture on film on this flight!

We joined Aaron from Bow River Troutfitters for an evening of caddis on the Bow River. It was simply one of those evenings. We anchored in a side channel loaded with smaller 16 to 20" browns and rainbows and watched as the water began to erupt with rising trout. The caddis were alive and the trout far too eager and willing.

We walked in to this high country lake specifically to seek shallow, shoreline cruisers waking and rising, tailing as they went. As so often is the case, the first fish of the day reminds us of several things and sets us up for the day. In this case we hiked in, I tied on a big terrestrial on to the set up I was using the day before: well used 4X tippet after a good day on a spring creek. The tired 4X had no chance. Honestly, at this stage of the trip losing the fish wasn't a big deal but if you want to land such fish maybe follow the advice of a dumdum check and have a better go of it than I did. This particular day went like this - until the evening absolutely exploded with exceptional tailing and rising trout in ankle deep water. But you'll have to wait until Tussock Tango is released later this year to see that footage! (PS - The words DumDum are deliberate. When I was 6 years old my uncle said to me "Dave, you're so dumb you can't even spell dumb dumb". To which I said "Yes I can! DUM DUM).

There are fish that are going to get caught. This was one. 6 weeks without much rain was tempered by the cooler than normal weather. A fish that has gone into 'enduring' mode to get through the drought period, most likely by shutting down somewhat and conserving energy. We chose this stream as there had been a fresh the day before and the water levels came up 5" vertically. This pushed the lethargic fish from the deeper slots to the inside edge to avoid current flow. Dave shares some thoughts to catching it and why the fly changes and dropper depth are important and needed.

After 5 hours of walking up an increasingly murky side channel to a larger river that was being impacted by heavy rains in the high country, we finally came to the mouth of a spring creek tributary unaffected by rains. And cue the rising brown trout spotted in the sliver of gin-clear water. We watched a spell as the fish cycled round the clear water pocket, making moves that respected the brown's movement, its visibility, and the sensitivity to its small, quiet habitat. Note the time we take in filming this sequence, how subtle the movements are, how deliberate each move is made, when the casts are made. The first cast was taken and the hook set was ok, but note how the head turns quickly toward the angler and the pull of the line sees the hook come straight out from the fish. No matter, with low angling pressure at this location it remained on feed, cycling and rising. Next cycle around the clear water another cast, another take.

This video, best described as a most unlikely second go, occurs three hours after Part 1. Part 1 was filmed on our way downstream and 3 hours later we found ourselves walking past the exact same run, almost looking at the exact same rocks. And, in a "this won't ever happen again" scenario, there were two new fish holding where we'd taken the two fish on the way downstream. 

A few things to note of the film include: Amelia's fish likely took on her first cast. The second cast is placed just as the fish is returning to its lie as the fish is higher in the water column. The idea was to induce a take while the fish is still up and active, which almost worked. Her third cast gets the take, however, Dave called out to 'set' on a hunch, not 100% but sure he'd seen the white of the mouth. The delayed set is likely what led to a dropped fish. Dave's fish, while hard to see, took twice as well. Look for the white of the mouth and roll of the body as the hook set is missed. Thankfully it too took a second time. 

We share the video of the fight of this fish to share a different style of fighting fish in a large, heavy water situation. The fish bolts down and across and screams upstream into Dave's backing. Note that while the fish is on the heavy, far side of the current Dave's rod is high. This is to keep as little of the heavy current on the line as possible, so that only the fish and rod connect, lessening the pressure on the set hook and tippet to avoid an inadvertent break off. As the fish comes to the soft side of flow, the sideways pressure is then used to attempt to bring the fish in. It bolts again but thankfully comes to net. Usually a fish that fights like this is foul hooked but this one was just a long, healthy brown with big strong fins that used the heavy current to its advantage.

It's a cool day. The daytime high is +12C with rain showers and wind that picked up to 100kmh. We start the day on the inside of a fast run with two dark "smudges" holding to rocks. These "smudges" are brown trout in colder water, less active as the light mayfly hatch has yet to begin and, being early in the season, there are no terrestrials about. The trouble is the two fish are only going to take a nymph and that they are less than a rod length from one another. Getting the cast flies high enough upstream to allow the nymph to sink deep enough to get the lower fish's attention while not spooking the upper fish nor inducing a downstream take from it is the issue. We wanted to try to take both fish. The discussion centers about that goal.

There are a few little hints in this one as we walk a small stream that is entering summer drought and warmer temperatures. The water is still cool but fish are starting to nose into the heads of riffles, holding prime feeding and holding lies. This is the step before they find warm water cover to rest in - or leave for deeper, cooler waters. This nice brown is actively feeding, we watched it do some wide feeding swings to nymphs prior to filming. Note the discussion about why we're using a shallow dropper set-up as well as why Dave fights the fish as he does. Both are effective in these situations.

In our third episode of our ongoing series "The Bank", we are joined by Aaron Feltham of Bow River Troutfitters in Calgary. We were streamer fishing deep & heavy along the outside bend before we opted to change our tactic to something lighter and smaller on the inside subtlety. Picking off subtle seams, targeting a subtle trough with a hopper-dropper and working it thoroughly provided wonderful moments this fall afternoon. We discuss a host of considerations in regards to why we chose this feature.

In Episode 2 we are at the peak of drought in Alberta. The flows are low and the weather hot. The water is warm and the rainbows and browns have abandoned the long, deep, slow glides and pools, seeking oxygen mixed into the riffled water at the top of runs. The browns simply glow as olive smudges - so obvious from even 40m+ away. Brian & I communicate as he lines up behind this nice brown trout and does a good job of hooking up. The forgotten rule: don't turn your back on a fish while fighting it, and make sure you do what's needed to get it around or past rocks ASAP.

The pilot for our new series "The Bank". Episode 01 "Helping a Friend" is helping our friend Devan with the subtleties and the intricate details and considerations that go into working a bankside riser. If you have never hired a guide but struggle with some of the finer points of working good, rising fish, the coaching Devan received is exactly what good fly fishing guides do. They keep a fairly even keel through encouragement and control, providing direction, yet allowing you to engage. We were on a favorite bank on the Bow River that is well known to have good risers and this day we engaged a few nice rainbows. We spotted the rise, drift wide around it as to not disturb it, and anchored at shore to wade back upstream. If you watch closely and listen to the rhythm and intensity of the casting, you can tell the longer the engagement continues, the more relaxed Devan's casting becomes and the greater chance he hooks up.
