18th Annual Lefty Kreh's Tie Fest

I'm privileged enough to be able to tie for the third year in a row at Lefty Kreh's Tie Fest at Kent Island Yacht Club. The trip is well worth it to the see the legends of the sport all in one place for one epic show. See you there...

From it's humble beginnings in a basement, to becoming one of the largest fly fishing shows on the East Coast, Tie Fest has always been open to the public. Come and talk to the icons of the sport. Lefty Kreh, Bob Popovics, Bob Clouser and many more call it Their "favorite event of the year." Learn to tie a certain pattern, get help with your casting, or just catch up with old friends!

Lefty Kreh's Tie Fest 2016

To learn more, follow the CCA Maryland Facebook page as well as the Tie Fest Facebook page. Take it from someone who has attended since 2009 and has participated in it twice, its absolutely well worth the travel and time to get down for the day and hang out in a one-on-one setting with the sport's greatest.

How To Tie the Turd Burglar Crab Fly

Back in March, at Lefty Kreh's Tie Fest, I had the privilege of meeting Ken Dorward of Hooked UpHooked Up™ is owned and operated by Uncommon Content, a progressive content creation, development and production company. Uncommon Content produces both fiction and non-fiction content to be distributed primarily across the web via youtube, television and other multi-media platforms. Inspired by our sister channel, Reserve Channel, Hooked Up™ is dedicated to bringing you the best of all things fishing.

Ken sat and watched me tie up a few flies and decided to get one on film, my Turd Burglar Crab. Before I could blink, I was mic'd up and had two cameras in my face. Not only was this my first show, but first time on film with a legit company. I was stoked, but shaking like a leaf. Ken and crew were awesome, they calmed my nerves and did a phenomenal job editing the video. We're looking forward to working more with Hooked Up in the future as the content they provide is 100% applicable to any angler.

A big thank you goes out to the Hooked Up crew! Without further adieu, here is the Turd Burglar Crab fly tutorial.

2013's Behind Us, Bring on 2014!

Well, its here. There's no avoiding it, not that I want to, but for most, 2013 was a great year and others are thankful its behind us. Looking forward, personally, I'm super stoked for 2014. I recently took a new job, which will be crazy at first but should give me more freedom to be with family and financially make the trips I've dreamed of, finally materialize.

It's day one of 2014 and there is already a lot to look forward to this year. From our 3rd Annual Carp Week (which will begin in roughly 225 days) to our hosted trip to Beaver Island with the gents at Indigo Guide Service (there are still two more spots), and more. A full calendar of whats in the books for 2014 (so far) is below...

December 2013-March 14th, 2014- CCA MD Tidal Pickerel Championship

January 24-26th- The Fly Fishing Show/IF4 in Somerset, NJ

Spring- F3T

June 21-24th- TLTFF's hosted trip with Indigo Guide Service in Beaver Island, MI

July 16th-18th- IFTD in Orlando, FL

Mid/Late July- TLTFF Crew Belize Trip

Mid August- TLTFF's 3rd Annual 'Carp Week'

Summer/Fall/Winter- Various CCA Maryland Tournaments and Events including, but not limited to, 2nd Annual Red/Trout Tournament, Kent Island Striped Bass C&R Tournament, 4th Annual Tidal Pickerel Tournament, Lefty Kreh's Annual Tie Fest, and more.

MORE TO COME...

* - Still up in the air

2013 was a great year for us personally, from Luis catching more fish than ever on the fly in places like Florida, Puerto Rico, Belize, Beaver Island, and more to me knocking 5 species off my Fly Fishing Bucket List, to getting my first Steelhead on the fly, signing on with Dizm Eyewear, and even winning the 1st Annual CCA Maryland Red/Trout Tournament's fly division. As for us as a crew, it was even better, having a blast with some great new reviews, adding brand new equipment to our arsenal, and finishing off 2013 with a record-breaking month in December with over 20,000 recorded unique views on the blog alone (does not count our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts) in just 31 days!

We have quite a few things up our sleeves for this year, including the launch of a new company and possible move over to that new site. More details on that will be rolling out over the next few weeks.

We are always looking forward to whats ahead and whatever we are blessed with. For those of you who have some great fishing spots or we've had the privilege of speaking to/fishing with in the past, please don't be a stranger, that goes for those of you who we haven't had the privilege of fishing with yet. We are always down to try and squeeze new trips into our schedule, if you don't ask, we can't make it happen! For 2014, we're looking forward to spending more time with you guys and getting lines wet with the ones who make this blog happen, you! Shoot us an email at tightlinedtalesofaflyfisherman@gmail.com letting us know what you think or have in mind.

The support is ALWAYS appreciated and does not go unnoticed. We look forward to bringing you more giveaways and contests this year with even better gear from our awesome affiliates, sponsors, and friends within the industry!

Thank you all again for everything, hold on, 2014 is going to be a great year!

Back in March we attended the CCA's Lefty Kreh's Tie Fest, formerly known as the Kent Island Tie Fest, an awesome event known for its ridiculously low prices on tying materials and great show of fly tying celebs. UPDATED: Upcoming Events for TLTFF

So we have some pretty cool trips "planned" for 2013. Two of which involve a Fly Fishing Show and Film Tour(s). Here's where you can meet up with the TLTFF Crew, throw back a few brews and tell stories about how many more fish you've caught than us.

We will be attending the following events, as of right now (more to follow as they get locked into our schedules):

  • Luis just returned from a short weekend trip in Miami where he hunted down some Permit, Snook, and Redfish. A trip report will be up in the next week or so with a full report, pictures, and some video footage.

  • Boatyard Bar & Grill's Angler's Night TONIGHT (February 26th) from 5-8pm. Happy hour drinks start at 5 and a Drake film hits the screen at 7. Join us for some fun and brews, Luis and I will both be there from about 6-8pm.

  • The Kent Island Tie Fest in Kent Island, MD, this year called Lefty Kreh's Tiefest will be March 9th this year. Some of you may remember our post about our trip to Tie Fest last year, killer time with some of the most world-renowned tiers. Last year we took pictures with both Bob Clouser and Lefty Kreh.

  • The Fly Fishing Film Tour in Baltimore, MD on March 15th (changed from the previous date of March 16th due to the venue double booking). This stop of F3T will be hosted by Great Feathers Fly Shop and held at the Centerstage Theater.

  • The Fly Fishing Film Tour in Arlington, VA on March 28th. This stop of F3T will be hosted by Urban Angler and held at the Arlington Cinema N Draft House. This has changed, we will no longer be attending this event but instead attending the F3T event above.

  • Luis will be headed to Belize Puerto Rico the end of March going into April hunting Bones and Perm. Keep you eyes on the blog in April for that trip report.

  • I will be headed up to Nantucket, MA around June 13th for a week of family and an attempt at some decent Stripers, Bluefish, and Albies.

  • Mid-Late October we will be headed up to Pulaski, NY for some Salmon and Steelhead fishing on the Salmon River. As this trip get closer, we will update everyone on that.

  • At some point we will be headed down south this year for Redfish, more info to follow as the trip materializes. This trip is slowly coming together, the next update should have official dates.

  • We are also trying to put a second trip together to Puerto Rico to jump some Poon, again, more info to follow as the trip materializes.

Trips pop up pretty often for us and usually on a weeks or even days notice. If your ever in the area or have an open spot on your local water for some fly fishing bros to drive or fly up to fish with you, let us know. We are always happy to meet new people, put faces with our followers, and toss a line in some new water. Please feel free to always contact us with any questions, ideas, or invites at tightlinedtalesofaflyfisherman@gmail.com. We would love to show any of you the water we fish and know, the invitation is always there.

Morgan wrote...  "Hey Cam, I went to the Kent Island Tie Fest here in Maryland this weekend and happened to be wearing my T.F.M. hoodie.  I ran into Bob Clouser and managed to sneak a picture with him.  Awesome guy and he loved the hoodie!  He said he was going to check out your site and actually wrote down the URL.  Hope this gets me in contention for the 2012 photo contest!"

Kent Island Tie Fest 2012

So Zach, LS, and I decided to make a trip over to the Kent Island Tie Fest yesterday at Kent Island Yacht Club. It was a nice short drive (compared to most trips we make to fishing spots), only took about 20 minutes. As part of the drive, we had to cross the Bay Bridge.

As a side note, the Bay is beautiful this time of year, cold, but amazingly beautiful. The water is like a turquoise-ish green and clear as can be (no fertilizers and algae in the water).

Anywho, we got to the "fest" around 10:30am and immediately noticed it was packed with license plates from DE, VA, PA, MD, and even some NY and NJ. It was a pretty good time, full of well priced tying materials and flies, books, DVDs, and amazing tiers just throwin down some gnarly flies. The first thing Zach said to me when we walked in was "this place smells like moth balls" and he couldn't have said a more true statement. The place was overwhelmed with 60+ year olds just telling lifetimes worth of stories. I was able to pick up and pass out some business cards and get some great shots of the show. About an hour in, we were ready to call the quits. I had picked up some materials and Zach got a good idea of some reels he might potentially buy for his new stick, the Redington Red Fly 4-Piece we mentioned as a Daily Deal a few weeks ago from REI.com.

Right before we were ready to walk out I spotted the man, the myth, the legend...Bob Clouser. I immediately turned to Zach and Luis and said, you gotta take my picture with him. I went right up to him and he immediately stuck out his hand for a shake and gave me a big smile. I explained to him that his son, Bob Jr., was the reason I was there today. Bob Jr. gave me the foundation of my fly tying expertise (not really expertise, but kinda) when I was up in school in PA. He is the manager of the White River Fly Shop at BPS in Harrisburg and taught all my free fly tying classes for 3 years. Bob Sr. thought that was awesome and was thrilled to get a picture with me. We talked for a bit and I got to see how kind and awesome of a man Bob really is. He told me a story about how at a show a few years ago, he was tying a Clouser Minnow and a man walked up to his table and started to watch. As he was watching, he looked a Bob Sr. and said, "you know, your not tying that right." Bob Sr. looked up at him a bit confused and just smiled. He said to me, "Obviously, that guy had no idea who I was, but it didn't bother me one bit." which he followed with a big smile and chuckle. Overall, awesome guy, I truly am blessed to have met him and the picture I took with him will be on my wall in the next week.

In summary, Kent Island Tie Fest was awesome. A great atmosphere combined with great fly fisherman always goes down as awesome in my books. Check the pictures below from the show to vicariously experience the good time we had!
