Gateway Trout Unlimited Fundraising Raffle
Gateway Trout Unlimited is proud to announce it's 2nd Annual Fundraising Dinner which will be held on Friday, February 17th 2017 at TAPAWINGO GOLF COURSE in Sunset Hills, Missouri. It is shaping up to be an exciting evening filled with raffles, silent auctions, food, and drinks.
Our featured speaker for the evening is none other than Chris Wood, President & CEO of TROUT UNLIMITED.
To kick off the promotion of the fundraising dinner, we are offering three great raffles. The goal is to create awareness of the event and to give those who cannot attend an opportunity to contribute to our fundraising efforts. Funds raised will go to expand Trout In The Classroom, fund Kids Fishing Events and to have the resources necessary to support current & upcoming conservation efforts in Missouri.
You do not need to be present at our fundraising dinner to win the raffles on this page. In fact, you do not even have to be a member of Trout Unlimited to participate. This raffle is open to all who wish to help our fundraising efforts.

District Angling
District Angling is an independent company formed to fill a small niche in the Washington DC area. We cater to fishermen wanting access to local fisheries. We specialize in fly fishing. You probably remember us if you were a customer of a few of the previous shops in the Arlington and Alexandria areas.
Although we're currently building out the company and do not have a brick and mortar retail space you can visit, we are currently hunting for the perfect location for our shop and you will receive another e-mail from us shortly with your chance to add input about our future destination shop.
We're the same casting and fly tying instructors, travelers, and fly fishing experts that you've come to know and trust. We're first and foremost anglers, just like you. We're fly fishing junkies. AMFF Announces 1st Annual Conservation Symposium
AMFF ANNOUNCES FIRST ANNUAL DEBORAH PRATT DAWSON CONSERVATION SYMPOSIUM

Manchester, Vermont– January 29, 2015 – The American Museum of Fly Fishing announced today that their first annual Deborah Pratt Dawson Conservation Symposium will be held on March 14th and 15th at the Orvis Fly Fishing School in Manchester, Vermont. The topic for the event will be the use of new technology in aiding conservation efforts.
The symposium will feature speakers from the national chapter of Trout Unlimited, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, American Rivers, Inter-Fluve, the Batten Kill Watershed Alliance, and the Atlantic Salmon Federation. The event will begin at the Orvis Fly Fishing School with registration and a light breakfast at 8 a.m. on March 14th. Event emcee Jim Heckman will introduce the keynote speaker, Dr. Michael Cooperman, at Dr. Cooperman will be followed by presentations by Cynthia Browning of the Batten Kill Watershed Alliance and Jon Carr of the Atlantic Salmon Federation. Following lunch, presentations continue with Christopher Haak of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, Amy Singler of American Rivers, and Nick Nelson of Interfluve. Event participants will have the opportunity to join the conversation with an interactive question and answer session after each presentation. Following the presentations there will be a closing reception starting at 5 p.m. at the American Museum of Fly Fishing and concluding at 7 p.m. The event continues the following morning with a light breakfast and conservation films, including the award-winning Return of the River shown at Manchester Village Picture Shows.
The cost of a weekend ticket is only $50 with admission to all presentations, movies, and food included. Weekend tickets are also available at a Benefactor level $100 (with $50 as a tax-deductible donation) and Sponsor at $250 (with $200 as a tax-deductible donation). Any full-weekend tickets must be purchased online before the event here. Educators and students can contact spitcher@amff.com for a discounted ticket. Sunday-only tickets are available for $20 online or at the Manchester Picture Shows box office, which includes admission to breakfast and the films. The AMFF has secured $99 a night pricing at the Manchester View Inn for event attendees. There are also discounted rates available at the Aspen, the Barnstead Inn, and the Inn at Manchester. The Paul H. Young chapter of Trout Unlimited, located in the metropolitan Detroit area, will be celebrating it's 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee on April 24th, 2014, and that evening they will be raffling off a custom 2013 StealthCraft15' AfterMath drift boat which is valued at over $11,000.
Only 300 tickets will be sold and they are $50 each. 1 in 300 isn't to bad of odds and can you imagine if you won this tricked out StealthCraft all the places you'd go?

You may be scrambling around today trying to think of a good last minute Christmas gift and I thought I'd pass along the suggestion of buying memberships for your family and friends to Trout Unlimited.
There are a lot of reasons to be a member of T.U. but the point that I find most impressive is that 89 cents of every dollar that is contributed does towards the mission of coldwater fishery conservation. Memberships make a difference.

Long Live the King
Via Alaska Fly Out:
Long Live the King is a story of hope and resurgence for Alaska's great King Salmon fishery. Returning numbers of the fish have been dropping steadily, and both 2012 and 2013 hit especially hard - with multiple rivers and regions across the state seeing some of the lowest returns ever, forcing Alaska Fish and Game officials to close or severely limit salmon fishing around the state, including on some of Alaska's most iconic rivers. In addition, what is starting to seem like an all out war on salmon – mining, dams, hatcheries and the state government are all marching forward in opposition of Alaska treasure salmon resource. For many, this is an attack on religion, not just a fish.
This film seeks to ignite an angler's passion - showing why salmon are worth fighting for from a fly fishing perspective. By showcasing some of Alaska's world class adventures - a team of Alaska's best guides and anglers explore the state's rivers, fly fishing for King Salmon, while practicing "catch and release" for the benefit of greater escapement and future salmon spawn. Through interviews and candid conversation, we will hear from long-time Alaska guides, lodge owners, Native elders, political figures, conservation leaders, and wilderness pioneers who have an abundance of untapped folk information on the state's great King Salmon lore. In these virtually untold stories, lies the spirit of Alaska - the dream of its wild lands and freedoms that can hardly be imagined in our current time.
King Salmon are an icon for Alaska, and a treasured sport fish for the entire world. Long Live the King celebrates the great homecoming of salmon to the Last Frontier, while promoting a re-energized culture of sustainability among salmon fishermen and women worldwide. Through inspiring imagery, explosive fishing, emotional testimony and a tone of sustainability, respect, and stewardship, the film breathes new life into the hearts of anglers. One goal of this film is to boost the grassroots efforts of our conservation partners to defend the land, waters, cultural heritage, and invaluable resources of Alaska, including the mighty King Salmon of the Last Frontier.

CVTU Project on The Run in Boiling Springs
I began to seriously fly fish and delve myself into expanding my knowledge base on entomology, technique, and a more in depth love for the sport in college. I went to Messiah College, which had the blue ribbon Yellow Breeches Creek cut right through its campus.
The YBC is known for its majestic views, large trout, and enormous hatches. There are certain spots most fly fisherman who fish it know about, like The Run at Boiling Springs. Not only does The Run have the convenience of Yellow Breeches Outfitters being only a stones throw away, but that trout, year-round, make the trek up this narrow run of water with hopes of getting into the lake that sits at the epicenter of Boiling Springs, PA.
This stretch is about 20ft across, if that, and is known for its difficultly of fishing due to low-lying branches and smart fish. Prior to CVTU stepping in, The Run had a series of small dams, easily passable by trout, spaced every 20-30ft that made the run all that more appealing to fisherman who enjoy the technique (and art) of nymphing. I caught my biggest brown to date under one of those small falls and have always had a respect for that section of YBC. The downside to how The Run was built, was that there was poor oxygenation and an odd flow, distributing fish in concentrated areas. Here's how CVTU made this amazing run, all that much better...

This summer the Cumberland Valley Chapter Trout Unlimited (CVTU) volunteers have completed another section in a multi-phase habitat improvement project in The Run in Boiling Springs. The first log wing deflector that was completed last summer. More recently the parking lot was finished early this summer.
The next pics depict the log vane deflector under construction and completed over the summer as well. This was about 25 yards downstream from the AT footbridge and turned a fairly flat, featureless pool with a depth of about a foot, into a much deeper section with a nice plunge pool and better flow/oxygenation. Within minutes after we completed this, I saw a couple nice trout move up under the logs.
Thanks are due to the Bureau of Forestry for donating the logs and Pennsy Supply for the shot rock. Also: PFBC, Shane Gilbert, and (as always) Gleim Environmental for their time and help. It's much appreciated.
In August the ongoing project by CVTU to improve habitat in The Run continued. Two additional vane deflectors were installed just downstream with the help of the students from the Rivers Conservation and Youth Camp. In the past, many of you have supported CVTU or the youth camp with donations or flies.
If you have not fished The Run in Boiling Springs lately, drop by. It's holding fish in large numbers this summer (this has not been consistent in recent years) and fishing well, even in the hottest weather. The improvement projects have worked well and fish can be seen holding both above and below them. Just a couple nights ago I was fly fishing, I managed an very nice brown trout on my third or fourth cast in The Run.
It's been a good year for The Run as well as the Breeches itself. I think the improvements have turned out well. Drop by and check 'em out.
