Grand Slams...of the Fishing Sorts
So there are a lot of different "Grand Slams" out there when it comes to fishing. I figured, hey, why not educate a bit and drop some knowledge for all of you out there wondering what a fishing grand slam is and how its done. So here we go... A grand slam is usually when you catch 3 out of 4 fish in grand slam category in a 24 hour period. There are many types of grand slams depending on the region your in and some vary by having 5 fish in a category in which only 3 still need to be caught. The most popular is the Caribbean Grand Slam also known as the Southeastern Grand Slam (see below). For fly fisherman the Caribbean Grand Slam slightly varies, theres only 3 fish to be caught, according to some. A "Super Grand Slam is when you catch all 4 fish in the category (or 4 out of the 5 for some). They're all crazy no matter what you say and the first two below are absolutely on my bucketlist. Here's all the grand slams I could think of/find online...
Southeastern Grand Slam: Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Snook (3 bold fish are the fly fishing ones).
Northeastern Grand Slam: Striped Bass, Bluefish, False Albacore, Bonito.
Alaskan Grand Slam: Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Coho (Silver) Salmon, Arctic Grayling.
Costa Rican (Billfish) Grand Slam: Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish.
Midwest Grand Slam: Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Walleye, Arctic Grayling.
Reef Grand Slam: Coral Trout, Smallmouth Nannygai, Largemouth Nannygai, Red Emporer.
Trout Grand Slam: Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Golden (Palomino) Rainbow, Tiger Trout, Hybrid (Brook/Brown) Trout.
I'm sure there's plenty more out there but this is all I could remember/find. Check it out for yourself on a Google search or simply make up your own based on what you have in your region (I made the "Trout" one up on my own based on the Breeches and the Gunpowder). My wife and I are headed to the Keys now for our summer vacation so lookout Southeastern Grand Slam, I got my eyes on you...
P.s. Check out the new poll on the Right-Hand side and vote for what Grand Slam would mean most to you!

Apologies
Three days without posts...inexcusable. Sorry about that folks. Zach and I fished Severn Run the other day with only one fish caught, a shad...odd I know but we'll take what we can get since the DNR isn't really doing much to bring Anne Arundel Counties fisheries back... Anywho, heres a daily reel or two for yall.

Fishing Knowledge
"A well-tied fly, well presented to a fish, resulting in a bent rod is one of life's greatest pleasures. When you can't fish, tie and let your imagination bend the rod." -Orvis

Fishing Trip: Gunpowder River-Take 3 + Updates
After being washed out last weekend due to the opening of all four gates on the Pretty Boy Dam, which we wont speak of, just seems to upset us since we only saw one fish all day and it didn't even make its way onto our hooks, we decided to try and redeem ourselves. The wives went away for the weekend, perfect opportunity for some great fishing. So Zach and I departed Annapolis for the Gunpowder at our usual time this past Saturday and were able to dip our feet in the water at around 8am. We packed our lunches and I put my gear (including my new Simms Freestone wading boots) into the Jeep the night before just to make sure we get up there on time and can crunch as many fish into the time we had. We jumped in about a mile downstream from the Pretty Boy Dam off Falls Rd. We waded down what we have both decided is the most beautiful section of the river. We fished through a lot of pressure, at least 2 fishermen every 200 yards or so and had one Brown under our belts which I caught on a Black Wooly Bugger right behind a nice rock sitting in the middle of the stream. Heres a pic:
We got back to the car and headed over to another stretch off Monkton Rd. We fished about a half mile of the river and only had one fish to claim from that stretch, a nice sized White Sucker Zach actually false hooked. We decided to grab lunch and make a move to another spot we really like off of Blue Mount Rd. (which we found with the help of the awesome guys at Backwater Angler Fly Shop) to try out a feeder creek that runs into the Gunpowder. We ended up wading about a mile or more upstream since we got into some good sized River Chub, Fallfish, and a Pumpkinseed on all different colors of Wooly Buggers, Zonkers, and Clouser Minnows. We had over a dozen fish each when Zach hooked into an awesome Brown. Check out the pics:
We fished the feeder run for most of the day since we got into some great fish. After walking back to the Gunpowder, we decided to fish downstream a bit from the feeder creek and ended up getting into/fishing the day with some wild brook trout, two of which we took on a double header. All around great day, the next trip is planned for 2 weeks from now but who knows what we'll get into between now and then...Check out the pics of the final fish and the scenes of the day:
Backwoods Update: My little bro Ryan headed down to Colin's pond (Bucks Pond) to fish with Colin and the Backwoods guys this past weekend and sent me some pics...check it out:

Gunpowder Falls: A Washout Day...
So my buddy Zach and I hit up Gunpowder Falls again today bright and early. We got up there around 7:30am and hopped right in around the Falls Rd area. Water was fast and cookin. We ended the day after fishing two spots around noon with no fish. I had one nice sized brown rise to a black Zonker but couldn't get it to bight. The plan is to head back up next weekend, if the water isn't too high again. A local said they opened all of the gates in the Pretty Boy Dam which explains the level being 3' above normal. Pics to follow...
